Laurie Staiert of Lake View Iowa, hosted the Harlan Iowa golf scramble last summer. She contacted Jon Erbst to see if we could donate radon charcoal test packets for her to offer to the public. She put an article in her paper to make people aware of the effects of radon and to let them know that they could pick up a test kit at the City Hall. Laurie’s husband was diagnosed with stage 4 radon-induced lung cancer on April 8, 2012 and died May 12, 2012. He was just 60 years old, a nonsmoker, and didn’t exemplify any symptoms prior to his diagnosis. Both homes that he had lived in for most of his life tested over 15pCi/L. She stated that perhaps had we been better informed, had our home tested with a mitigation system installed, he may not have had to suffer such a horrific death and may still be with us today.
