Many companies tend to talk about, “What” it is that they do and, “How” it is that they do it. But here at Thrasher Basement Systems we have been putting more and more focus on, “Why” we do what we do. It may sound silly because as we all know, companies are in business to make money. It is true that we need to be profitable in order to continue to serve customers, but we have found that in order to be an extraordinary company we must not focus on goals of profit first. Instead, we have come to understand that we must prioritize our “Why” by the results that we provide for our customers and our employees. It was this validation of beliefs that have been upheld by the Thrasher family for nearly 40 years which led our management team to develop our “Why” Statement: “To be a company that helps people achieve extraordinary results”. As of late, our “Why” Statement has been a popular topic of conversation throughout all departments at Thrasher Basement Systems. With employees who are feeling more empowered than ever, due to a heightened sense of a more noble purpose, and our customers are happier than ever!
As the sales team leader for our Total Basement Finishing department, I too have put much more thought into this business of “Why”. Often times during a design consultation, I will ask homeowners “Why” they would like to finish their basement. I hear answers like, “So I have more space to entertain”, or “Our family is growing and we need another bedroom”. It has become apparent to me that ultimately, people want to finish their basement because they need more space to allow for them and their families to lead a more comfortable, fulfilling life at home.
It is no secret “Why” people look to the basement when it comes to achieving this goals. Finishing a basement is the most economical way to add finished living space to a home as opposed to adding an addition or building up in the form of a dormer. This is because you have structural walls, a ceiling, and a floor in a basement already. It does not require a new foundation, new siding, or a new roof like the addition or dormer would. In most cases it is also much more economical than going out and buying a new home of equal quality that offers the additional space, especially when you consider the additional costs and inconveniences that come with a move.
I tend to ask a lot of questions during my consultations and one question I always ask homeowners is “Why” they are considering Thrasher Basement Systems for their basement-finishing project. I tend to get answers like, “Your company has a great reputation!”, or “My co-worker used you for a project and said you were great!” I really appreciate these comments. I know that the methods we use to finish basements are different than how everyone else finishes basements, and in order to continue to get referrals and uphold our outstanding reputation, it is my job to show homeowners that our methods are far superior.
The easiest way for me to communicate this message to homeowners is to simply tell them “Why”. After nearly 40 years in business, we have done work in over 40,000 basements across Nebraska and Western Iowa, and we feel we have a very unique understanding of the basement environment.
