Saving Your Basement

As technology advances in many aspects s of our lives it is important to understand how it also affects our health. Diagnosing by doctors has come a long way in the last 20 + years.  But the advances in home construction are both good for the efficiency of our energy use, and bad for our indoor air quality.  Families are spending significant more time indoors.   Indoor allergens such as dust and mold spores have exploded in that 20+ years.  As our homes become more air tight, moisture is not being removed sufficiently, and mold is a common result of excess moisture and organic material mostly found in our basements.

When it comes to basement waterproofing most contractors are not using the most advanced technology to help their customers.  If you have a basement that has had, ground water seepage you can bet your studs and drywall has been affected.  The remedy most contractors recommend is to install drain tile under the floor. Let’s look at why most of these contractors are not using the advances in technology to do the right thing for their customers.

If drain tile is installed in a finished basement, all the concrete from under the finished wall is removed so they can place gravel on the footing and allow the water to percolate to the drain tile.  It is impossible to place concrete back against the wall and under the studs.  First, concrete-to-concrete creates a cold joint giving not only water, but moisture a place to travel.  Second, and most common, is gravel is pushed so high under the wall that there is no concrete covering the gravel.  This lets in an endless stream of moisture.  This endless stream of moisture is now in a dark cavity with organic material, the perfect petri dish to have mold grow for years to create an unhealthy environment.

Our solution, is called WaterGuard with a wall protective membrane gives us the most advanced protection against mold growing in the dark cavity behind the wall.  Since the building envelope is much tighter with the advancements in building materials, it is also extremely important to treat the air in the basement with a dehumidification system that can affect the whole house.  The SaniDry basement air system not only dehumidifies the air but also will take out mold spores and dust mites which are most common indoor air allergens.

If contractors are not explaining the reasons behind the problems that are happening to their customers, can we expect them to provide the right solution using the advances in technology and building materials?
