The Northwest Iowa Review, out of Sheldon, IA, recently did a story on radon gas and the dangers of not having it mitigated. The story focuses on Elmer Beltman of Sheldon, IA. Beltman tested his home for radon and found his home was testing at 20 picocuries (pCi/l). 20 pCi/l is 5 times above the "safe" level as regulated by the EPA. The story goes on to point out that radon gas does not discriminate between new or old homes, but rather how many cracks or holes in floors or ceilings there are in a home. As mentioned in the article, 2 out of 3 homes in Iowa and Nebraska test with elevated levels of radon gas.
Later on in the newspaper article, they talk about how Beltman chose to use Thrasher Basement Systems to mitigate his high radon levels. After Thrasher installed their radon mitigation system, Beltman's radon levels went from 20 pCi/l down to 1.6 pCi/l dropping the level 2.4 pCi/l below the safe level.
